![]() Santiago Santiago Atitlán is located on Lake Atitlán across the lake from Panajachel. The group of 28 women began 14 years ago as foot loom weavers. Seven years ago they brought in some back strap weavers as well. They are originally from the communities of Panabaj abd Tzanchaj, both of which were severely devastated by Hurricane Stan in 2005. Most of the women lost their homes and belongings to this disaster. They make cosmetic cases, change purses, checkbook covers, coasters, and other small pouch items for export by Mayan Hands. In 2009, some of these women participated in our sewing program where they took sewing classes and purchased sewing machines with loans through our micro-credit lending program, allowing them to finish products that previously they paid someone else to do. |
