Chirijquiac

Like many groups, Chirijquiac has a complicated history, fraught with conflict and struggled resolution. Originally formed as part of a literacy program, the group later received microcredit loans but no help finding markets, and so defaulted on the loans. They later evolved into a weaving program and became connected to Mayan Hands. There are now 32 women in this group, including cinta weavers (cinta looms are a hybrid of foot and backstrap looms), embroiderers, and one large foot loom weaver.  In 2009, these women participated in the Thirteen Threads sewing program where they purchased sewing machines with loans through our micro-credit lending program and learned how to sew in their community.  They have been successfully repaying these loans.
